Diabetic retinopathy is the most common eye condition affecting people with diabetes. Retinopathy causes progressive damage to the tiny blood vessels of the retina at the back of the eye. If left undetected, it can lead to bleeding, retina swelling, oxygen starvation, and irreversible blindness.
The risk of retinopathy increases with the duration of diabetes and is significantly higher in patients with poor blood glucose or blood pressure control. Uncontrolled sugar also elevates the risk of cataracts, glaucoma, and macular edema.
Because early retinopathy typically exhibits **no visual symptoms**, annual comprehensive fundus examinations are crucial. Our Wakad center is equipped with high-resolution fundus cameras to capture and grade retinal states early, ensuring timely intervention.
